Year-Round Property Care in North Georgia

North Georgia's climate means your property needs attention in every season. The hot, humid summers, mild winters, and heavy spring rains each bring different challenges. Here's a season-by-season breakdown of what your property needs and when.

Spring (March - May)

March: Wake-Up Month

Apply pre-emergent herbicide before soil temperatures hit 55°F consistently — this prevents crabgrass and other summer weeds before they start. Clean up debris from winter, prune damaged branches, and start fresh mulch in garden beds.

April: Growth Begins

Begin regular mowing as warm-season grasses like Bermuda and Zoysia start growing. This is also the ideal time for aeration and overseeding any thin spots. Check your irrigation system — replace broken heads, test coverage, and adjust timers for spring watering needs.

May: Full Speed

Lawns should be growing aggressively by now. Start your regular mowing schedule (weekly for most properties). Apply the first round of fertilizer. Begin mosquito treatments if you want to enjoy your outdoor space this summer.

Summer (June - August)

The work shifts to maintenance and protection. Mow at the right height (3+ inches for most North Georgia turf types) to shade roots and retain moisture. Water deeply but less frequently — early morning is best. Keep up with mosquito treatments. Watch for brown patch fungus, especially in humid periods.

Fall (September - November)

September - October: Transition

Apply fall fertilizer to strengthen roots before winter. This is the most important fertilizer application of the year. Overseed cool-season lawns (fescue). Begin leaf removal as trees start dropping — leaving leaves on the lawn too long smothers grass and invites disease.

November: Wind Down

Final mow of the season at a slightly lower height. Complete fall cleanup — leaves, gutter cleaning, garden bed cleanup. Winterize your irrigation system to prevent freeze damage. Apply lime if soil tests show high acidity (common in North Georgia).

Winter (December - February)

The slowest season for property care, but not a break. Prune dormant trees and shrubs — winter is the ideal time for structural pruning because you can see the branch structure clearly. Plan spring projects. This is the best time to schedule hardscaping, drainage, or major landscape work for spring installation.
