The Mosquito Problem in North Georgia

North Georgia's warm, humid summers and abundant tree cover create ideal mosquito habitat. Add in the rainfall we get from April through September, and you have a recipe for mosquito populations that can make your backyard unusable from dusk to dark. But not every approach to mosquito control actually works.

What Doesn't Work (or Barely Works)

Let's clear up some common misconceptions:

  • Citronella candles — they create a small zone of mild repellency directly around the candle. Step 5 feet away and you're unprotected.
  • Bug zappers — studies show they kill far more beneficial insects than mosquitoes. Most mosquitoes aren't attracted to UV light.
  • Ultrasonic devices — multiple peer-reviewed studies have found zero effectiveness. They simply don't work.
  • Bats and purple martin houses — while these animals do eat mosquitoes, they don't eat enough to meaningfully reduce populations. Mosquitoes are a tiny fraction of their diet.

What Actually Works

1. Eliminate Standing Water

This is the single most impactful thing you can do. Mosquitoes need standing water to breed, and they don't need much — a bottle cap's worth is enough. Walk your property and empty, cover, or drain anything that holds water: plant saucers, clogged gutters, tarps, old tires, bird baths (refresh weekly), kids' toys, and low spots in the yard.

2. Professional Barrier Treatments

This is where the real results come from. A barrier spray treatment applies a residual insecticide to the areas where mosquitoes rest during the day — the undersides of leaves, shrub canopies, under decks, fence lines, and shaded areas. When mosquitoes land on treated surfaces, they're eliminated. The treatment lasts approximately 21 days, which is why we recommend recurring applications throughout the active season (April - October in North Georgia).

3. Targeted Larvicide

For water features, ponds, or drainage areas that can't be drained, we use larvicide treatments that kill mosquito larvae before they become biting adults. These products are safe for fish, pets, and wildlife.

How Our Mosquito Program Works

We treat every 21 days during mosquito season. Each visit, we inspect for new standing water sources, apply barrier spray to resting areas, and treat any water features with larvicide. Most customers see a dramatic reduction after the first treatment, with each subsequent treatment building on the last. By midsummer, the yard is genuinely usable again.
